Hanghuhn Project Report

Reactivating my Blog to show you guys some works in progress of some of my contributions for the Hanghuhn Project.

I'd like to show you a few impressions of the process of creating fantastic creatures.

The project is a running collaboration between fantastic and insanely talented artists Fabian Marscholik, Lady Katjakai and me and is coordinated and put in form by Communication Designer André Kulbarsch.

Visit their homepages to see more.

Information on release to come soon.

Until then have a good time seeing these snipplets of my sketches.

First there is the brainstorming gathering ideas ...

Then there is the visualisation, rough sketches turning to advanced sketches.

Sometimes I do little stick figures to help me find a motive. They often still look very crude.

Next I go on and do a couple of sketches.

Since we decided to work totally analog, just ink and aquarells for the finish, I did the sketches with pencils and graphits, because it's easier to later work on with watered colors.

After thats done I go on with the colors and later add the lineart above. Sometimes I do the linearts first, but I found it to be more at risk of getting smeared that way.

That'S all the basic principles I follow in creating fantastic creatures and monsters.

As for inspiration that really can be a mixture of anything, Books, Music, Folktales.

In this particular case more folktales since it's to be a project about "real" existing creatures of folklore ;-)

In this particular case I added coffee and wine drops to the coloring palette to give it a more raw dirty and note like look. Of course I'm afraid those stains are bound to vary in colour more than good pigmented aquarells...

Studies for the nightcrawler/Nachtmahr illustration.

Studies for Tatzelwurm illustration.

The Tatzelwurm work in progress. For this particular beast I wanted to achieve a more wyrm-like cave-dwelling creature. While I draw it, I listened to a reading of the "Ted the caver"-Creepypasta, to come into the mood :D

Next: The Nachzehrer/revenant in production:

Next, how to get rid of one of those undead:

Again, I used some coffee and wine to stain the paper and create an old look.

Also, to gain an ancient paperwork look I experimented with adding callygraphy parts. Not at all easy to learn a new scribe.

For the Basilisk I started with the lineart:

Merfolk studies

Jackalope or Wolpertinger studies

So much for the little workshop tour. Hope you're maybe a little exited for our project and more art to come :-)
